A Wake-Up Call for Christians and the Church

In the book of Haggai, God delivers a powerful message to His people: “Consider your ways.” These words were spoken at a time when the Israelites had returned from exile and were rebuilding their homes, but neglecting the house of the Lord. This chapter resonates deeply with us today. In a culture that prizes self-advancement, God is still asking His people to pause, reflect, and re-evaluate their priorities.

Are we truly putting God first, or are we too busy building our own lives that we’ve forgotten Him?

What Does "Consider Your Ways" Mean in Haggai 1?

Haggai 1:5-7 (KJV) “Now therefore thus saith the Lord of hosts; Consider your ways. Ye have sown much, and bring in little... he that earneth wages earneth wages to put it into a bag with holes.”

"Consider Your Ways" Means Re-Evaluating Your Priorities

God was speaking to a people who had returned from exile but had forgotten their spiritual responsibility. They were focused on rebuilding their homes while the Lord's temple remained in ruins.

Today, this is a mirror for us: are we prioritising success, money, and comfort over prayer, worship, and service to God?

Ignoring God’s Priorities Leads to Spiritual Lack

“Ye have sown much, and bring in little…” (Haggai 1:6). This Scripture highlights the consequences of misplaced focus. The people worked hard but were never satisfied. Many Christians experience this today: constant effort, little fruit, because they’ve left God out of their priorities.

How Christians Can Practically Consider Their Ways

1. Return to the Word of God

Daily Bible reading is foundational. Let the Word guide your choices. (Psalm 119:105)

2. Rebuild the Spiritual Altar in Your Life

Like Elijah in 1 Kings 18:30, repair your altar through consistent prayer and worship.

3. Obey God Promptly and Fully

Haggai 1:12 – “Then Zerubbabel... and all the remnant of the people obeyed the voice of the Lord their God…” God honours obedience. Delayed obedience leads to delayed blessing.

4. Invest in God’s Work, Not Just Your Own

Rebuild God’s temple—whether through your church, service, or mission. Put God’s kingdom first (Matthew 6:33).

What Happens When You Truly Consider Your Ways?

God Will Stir Your Spirit Again

Haggai 1:14 – “And the Lord stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel...”When you shift your focus back to God, He revives your passion, restores your purpose, and empowers your efforts.

You’ll Experience Divine Backing and Blessing

Haggai 1:13 – “Then spake Haggai... saying, I am with you, saith the Lord.”When we obey, God reassures us of His presence. Nothing is more important than knowing God is with you.

Prayer: Lord, Help Me Consider My Ways

Heavenly Father, I repent for putting my plans before Yours. Help me to consider my ways and to realign my heart with Your will. Stir my spirit to rebuild what matters: my walk with You, my service in Your house, and my obedience to Your Word. Be with me, and let my life bear fruit that glorifies You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Final Thought: It's Time to Consider Your Ways

Spiritual fruitfulness begins with realignment. Don’t ignore the whisper of God calling you back. Like the people in Haggai's day, this is your moment to respond, rebuild, and realign with God’s purposes. Will you consider your ways today?
