Growing in Faith: What Spiritual Growth Really Looks Like

Updated: May 19

Are you struggling to grow spiritually?
Are you struggling to grow spiritually?

Every Christian desires to grow spiritually. Many try but do not get the result they desire. And the reason we do not grow spiritually is because we have the wrong idea of what spiritual growth is. Spiritual growth is not about perfection—it’s about progression. It’s the quiet, daily journey of becoming more like Christ, learning to trust God more deeply, and letting the Holy Spirit shape our hearts.

We often think growth should be fast, visible, or measurable—but in God’s kingdom, growth is often invisible, internal, and intentional. It is worth noting that spiritual growth is not automatic. You must make up your mind every day to press into God and pay the price required for growth.

What is Spiritual Growth?

Spiritual growth is the process of:

  • Becoming more like Christ

  • Becoming more rooted in God's Word

  • Learning to obey even when it's hard

  • Developing Christlike character—love, patience, humility. Manifesting the fruits of the Spirit

  • Seeking God not just in crisis, but in the quiet moments too

One of the things I’ve personally struggled with is exactly that: choosing Jesus above all else, even when it costs something. I love my comfort, I love my space, and I love doing what I want, when I want. But I’ve discovered that when it comes to the things of God and spiritual growth, I must be willing to submit to the dealings of God.

For example, I love sleeping probably too much. And sometimes, when the Lord inspires me to pray in the early hours, I find myself choosing sleep over obedience. But the Bible rightly says in Luke 18:1,

“And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint.”

Comfort is a weakness of the flesh. And those who grow spiritually are those who have learned to overcome the desires of the flesh and allow the Spirit to reign in their lives. Growth doesn’t always feel good, but it always produces fruit when we remain surrendered.

The Word is Our Foundation

If we want to grow spiritually, we must stay planted in the Word of God. Just like a tree needs roots, we need scripture to stabilise us through storms, seasons, and change.

“But his delight is in the law of the Lord... He is like a tree planted by streams of water.”— Psalm 1:2–3

The more we study the Bible, not just read it, but apply it—the more our faith deepens.

Growth Requires Surrender

True growth often comes through pruning. God removes things that hinder our walk with Him, not to punish us, but to prepare us. The truth is that pruning is hard. It is not easy to let go of things and beliefs we have held onto for so long. Little do we know that these things are stopping us from growing spiritually.

Are you willing to surrender the things that keep you spiritually stuck?

  • Unforgiveness

  • Comparison

  • Fear

  • Busyness

Letting go allows God to work through you, not just in you.

How to Start Growing Spiritually

If you’re wondering where to begin, here are some simple (but powerful) steps:

  1. Daily time in the Word — even 10 minutes makes a difference.

  2. Consistent prayer life — talk to God honestly.

  3. Journaling — reflect on what God is teaching you

  4. Community — surround yourself with other believers.

  5. Obedience — act on what you’re learning, even when it’s uncomfortable

Conclusion

You don’t have to have it all together to grow. You just need a willing heart and an open spirit.

“He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion.”— Philippians 1:6

Keep showing up. Keep seeking Jesus. Growth will come in His time, His way.
