Simple Steps for New Believers to Grow in Faith

Starting your journey with God is one of the most beautiful decisions you will ever make. Yet, as a new Christian, you may wonder: “How do I actually build a real, personal relationship with God?”

A relationship with God is not built through religion alone; it’s built through daily connection, trust, and intentional time with Him. Just like any relationship, it deepens through communication, consistency, and love.

Jesus said:

“Remain in Me, and I will remain in you. Just as a branch is unable to produce fruit by itself unless it remains on the vine, neither can you unless you remain in Me.” —John 15:4 (CSB)

In this post, you’ll discover simple, powerful ways to grow closer to God through prayer, worship, and the Word, even if you’re just starting.

1. Build Your Relationship with God Through Prayer

Prayer is simply talking to God. You don’t need special words or perfect sentences. God is not looking for performance; He is looking for your heart.

“The Lord is near to all who call on Him, to all who call on Him in truth.” —Psalm 145:18 (NIV)

Prayer allows you to:

  • Share your fears and dreams.

  • Ask for wisdom and strength.

  • Thank God for His blessings

  • Confess and receive forgiveness.

Jesus Himself modelled a simple prayer (Matthew 6:9–13), showing us that prayer is meant to be relational, not complicated.

Simple Daily Prayer Practice

  • Start with 5–10 minutes a day.

  • Talk to God honestly about your day..

  • Thank Him for at least one thing

  • Ask for His guidance and peace

Prayer for a Growing Relationship with God

Father God, I desire to know You more. Teach me how to talk to You and trust You with my whole heart. Help me to come to You daily with honesty and faith. Draw me closer to You as I learn to walk with You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

2. Grow Closer to God Through Reading the Bible

The Bible is God’s voice in written form. When you read Scripture, you are learning who God is, how He thinks, and how He guides His people.

“All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness.” —2 Timothy 3:16 (CSB)

You don’t need to understand everything at once. Growth happens little by little.

Tips for New Christians Reading the Bible

  • Start with the Book of John to learn about Jesus.

  • Read 1 chapter a day.

  • Ask God before you read: “Lord, help me understand what You want to teach me today.”

  • Write down one verse that stands out to you.

“Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light on my path.” —Psalm 119:105 (NIV)

3. Experience God Through Worship

Worship is more than singing; it is a lifestyle of honouring God. When you worship, you shift your focus from your problems to God’s presence.

“God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in Spirit and in truth.” —John 4:24 (CSB)

You can worship by:

  • Playing worship music at home

  • Singing quietly to God

  • Thanking Him out loud

  • Living in obedience and gratitude

Worship invites peace, strengthens faith, and reminds your heart who God truly is.

4. Trust God Through Obedience

As your relationship with God grows, He will gently lead you to change certain things, not to punish you, but to protect you and help you grow.

“If you love Me, you will keep My commands.” —John 14:15 (NIV)

Obedience is not about perfection; it’s about direction. Each small step builds deeper trust between you and God.

5. Grow Through Consistency, Not Perfection

Many new Christians feel discouraged when they miss a day of prayer or Bible reading. But God is not keeping score; He is building a relationship.

“He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” —Philippians 1:6 (NIV)

Consistency

means:

  • Showing up again

  • Trying again

  • Trusting God again

Your relationship with God grows through daily choosing Him, even on imperfect days.

6. The Promise of Drawing Near to God

God has already promised to meet you when you seek Him:

“Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.” —James 4:8 (NKJV)

This means:

  • When you pray, God listens.

  • When you read, God speaks.

  • When you worship, God moves.

  • When you trust, God works
