Do you desire to grow closer to God? Grow closer to God with these daily habits and biblical examples.

Are you longing to experience a deeper and more personal relationship with God? Many believers desire a closer walk with the Lord, but aren’t sure how to get there. The good news is that God desires a relationship with you, even more than you desire it with Him! James 4:8 says; Draw unto God and He will draw near to you.

The Bible is filled with practical examples of people who walked closely with God. Their lives give us daily habits we can adopt to grow spiritually and build a deeper, intimate relationship with our Creator.

Let’s explore 7 daily practices to draw closer to God, along with scriptural references and biblical examples for each.

1. Start Your Day with God in Prayer

“O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee...” — Psalm 63:1 (KJV)

Prayer is the foundation of our relationship with God. It is how we communicate with God, express our hearts, and listen for His voice. Prayer is what fosters our relationship with God.

Biblical Example: Daniel prayed three times a day, even when it meant risking his life (Daniel 6:10). His habit of prayer brought him favour and divine protection. God spoke to him and heard his prayers.

Practice It: Start each morning with 10–15 minutes of prayer. Talk to God like a friend. Thank Him, surrender your day, and ask for wisdom.

2. Meditate on God’s Word Daily

“But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.” — Psalm 1:2 (KJV)

Reading Scripture is like hearing God speak directly to your heart. Meditating means reflecting deeply, not just reading. It is thinking deeply on the word. Meditation unlocks revelation.

Biblical Example: Joshua was commanded to meditate on God’s Word day and night (Joshua 1:8). As a result, he led Israel with courage and success. Meditating on God's word opens the door to understanding what God is saying or has said.

Practice It: Pick a verse and reflect on it throughout the day. Ask, “What is God showing me through this?” Write it down and pray it back to Him.

3. Worship God with Your Whole Heart

“God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.” — John 4:24 (KJV)

Worship shifts your focus from yourself to the greatness of God. It invites His presence and softens your heart. This is one of the ways you attract the presence of God to you.

Biblical Example: David was known as a man after God’s heart (1 Samuel 13:14). He worshipped with singing, dancing, and total surrender—even in tough times (Psalm 34:1). Worship makes it easy to surrender to God. Because in worship, you know and learn of God. It is easy to give to the one you trust.

Practice It: Play worship music during your routine, sing a favourite hymn, or quietly praise God throughout your day. Do this intentionally and consistently.

4. Live in Obedience to God’s Word

“If ye love me, keep my commandments.” — John 14:15 (KJV)

Love for God is proven by obedience. Obedience opens doors to deeper fellowship with Him. Sometimes obedience is not easy, but it is the way God can trust you. The Bible says that obedience is better than sacrifice. Obedience is a quick way to the heart of God.

Biblical Example: Abraham obeyed God even when asked to sacrifice his son (Genesis 22). His obedience showed unwavering trust and led to God’s blessing.

Practice It: Ask God each day, “Is there anything You want me to obey or surrender today?” Then take that step.

5. Journal Your Walk with God

“Write the vision, and make it plain...” — Habakkuk 2:2 (KJV)

Journaling helps you track growth, remember what God has said, and reflect on answered prayers.

Biblical Example: Many Psalms are David’s personal prayers and reflections, essentially his journal. They reveal his heart and deepen our understanding of intimacy with God. This shows how journaling is important because it would not just bless you, but also bless others.

Practice It: Each day, jot down your prayers, a verse that stood out, or a way you saw God move.

6. Practice Gratitude and Praise

“In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God...” — 1 Thessalonians 5:18 (KJV)

Gratitude shifts your mindset and keeps your heart open toward God. Gratitude opens the door for more.

Biblical Example: Paul and Silas praised God while in prison (Acts 16:25), and their worship led to freedom, not just for them, but for others.

Practice It: List 3 things you’re grateful for daily. Speak them aloud as a form of praise.

7. Fellowship with Other Believers

“Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together...” — Hebrews 10:25 (KJV)

God often speaks and strengthens us through other believers. This helps with accountability and consistency.

Biblical Example: The early church, as described in Acts 2, met daily, shared meals, prayed, and grew together. Their unity brought spiritual power and growth.

Practice It: Join a small group, attend a Bible study, or call a friend to pray together. You weren’t meant to grow alone.

Final Encouragement:

God isn’t waiting for you to become perfect; He wants your heart. Spiritual intimacy is built one day, one habit, and one “yes” at a time.

“Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you.” — James 4:8 (KJV)
