How to Strengthen Your Relationship with God

Many Christians deeply desire a closer, more meaningful relationship with God, but often struggle with achieving it. It’s easy to feel stuck in routine, unsure of how to truly connect with God beyond Sunday services and short prayers. If that’s where you are, take heart. A deeper relationship with God is not only possible, it’s God’s desire for you, too. James 4:8 says, "Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded."

The Bible tells us in Genesis 5:24 that “Enoch walked faithfully with God; then he was no more, because God took him away.” This isn’t just a beautiful line of Scripture, it is a powerful reminder that a consistent walk with God can lead to complete transformation. Enoch didn’t just believe in God; he walked with Him daily, in trust, obedience, and intimacy.

So, how can you strengthen your relationship with God? Here are a few truths to guide you:

1. Be Consistent in Seeking Him

Relationships don’t grow through occasional contact. They thrive on intentionality and consistency. One of the reasons our relationship with God suffers is simply because we don’t spend enough regular time with Him. Daily devotion, time in the Word, and honest prayer open the door for deeper connection. You don’t need hours; what you need is focus and faithfulness. 1 Chronicles 16:11 tells us that "Look to the LORD and his strength; seek his face always." The emphasis here is on always seeking God. Not on some days, but every day.

2. Make It Personal

God wants a real relationship with you, not just your church attendance, routines, or good deeds. He desires your heart. Talk to Him as you would a loving Father, a trusted Friend, and a faithful Guide.

Don’t settle for second-hand faith or simply living off what others say about God. Let your walk with Him be personal, shaped by your own experiences in His presence.

When Jesus taught His disciples to pray, He began with the words: “Our Father who art in heaven.” This wasn’t just a formality, it was an invitation. God doesn’t want distance; He wants closeness. He wants you to know Him intimately, to trust Him fully, and to walk with Him daily.

Let your relationship with God be more than a ritual; let it be a genuine, life-changing connection.

3. Let Obedience Lead the Way

Obedience deepens intimacy because it aligns your will with His. Love isn’t just something we say, it’s something we live out. Strengthening your relationship with God means choosing obedience, even when it’s uncomfortable or inconvenient. True love for God is shown through a heart that listens and responds to His voice. The more you obey, the more you’ll begin to recognise His guidance and understand His heart.

As Scripture reminds us in 1 Samuel 15:22, “To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams.” God is not looking for outward acts alone, He desires hearts that are fully surrendered and willing to follow His lead.

4. Invite God into Every Part of Your Life

God doesn’t want to be part of your life only on Sundays or during morning devotions, He wants to be involved in everything. He longs to walk with you through your decisions, your challenges, your celebrations, and your daily routine.

When you intentionally include God in every area, you create space for His wisdom, comfort, and direction to flow freely into your life. As Proverbs 3:6 says: “In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.”

This is a promise—when you make God your first thought, not your last resort, He will lead you with clarity and peace. Let every step you take acknowledge Him, and trust that He will guide you in the right direction.

Final Thoughts

A strong relationship with God doesn’t happen overnight. It’s built one moment of surrender at a time, one prayer at a time, one act of obedience at a time. Like any meaningful relationship, it requires effort, but the reward is eternal.

Keep walking with Him. Draw near and He will draw near to you.
