"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls."
Matthew 11:28–29

Have you ever reached a point where you have nothing left to give? Where the demands of life, work, family, responsibilities, and expectations have drained you so completely that even getting through the day feels like climbing a mountain?
If that's where you are today, this devotional is for you.
Reflection
Notice what Jesus doesn't say here. He doesn't say "push through." He doesn't say "try harder" or "be stronger." He says come.
That one word carries so much grace. Come as you are, exhausted, overwhelmed, running on empty. Come with your unfinished to-do list, your unanswered prayers, your tired heart. Jesus isn't waiting for you to have it all together before He meets with you. He is inviting you exactly as you are right now.
The word rest here in the original Greek is anapausis, meaning a refreshing, a cessation of labour, a restoration of strength. This is not just physical rest. Jesus is offering rest for your soul, the deep, inner kind that no holiday, no sleep and no distraction can provide. Only He can give it.
There is also something beautiful in the phrase "learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart." Jesus is not a demanding taskmaster standing over you with a clipboard. He is gentle. He understands the weight you carry. He knows what it feels like to be human, to be tired, to face impossible demands. And He meets you there with gentleness, not judgment.
A Second Scripture
"He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint." Isaiah 40:29–31
Even the strongest, youngest and most capable people run out of strength. This is not a character flaw; it is part of being human. But those who hope in the Lord, who wait on Him, trust Him and bring their emptiness to Him, receive renewed strength. Not borrowed strength. Not temporary energy. Renewed strength, restored from the inside out.
Reflection Questions
Where in your life are you currently running on empty?
Are you trying to keep going in your own strength rather than coming to God with your exhaustion?
What would it look like today to genuinely rest in God rather than just push through?
Today's Prayer
Lord, I come to You today exactly as I am, tired, drained and in need of Your rest. I have been trying to keep going in my own strength and I am running on empty. Forgive me for not coming to You sooner.
Thank You that You invite me to come just as I am. Thank You that You are gentle and humble in heart, and that You meet me with grace, not judgment. I receive the rest you are offering me today.
Renew my strength from the inside out. Where I am weary, be my energy. Where I am overwhelmed, be my peace. Where I am empty, fill me with Your presence. Help me to hope in You today and trust that You will carry what I cannot.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
A Practical Step for Today
Before you move on to the next thing on your list, take five minutes to sit quietly with God. No phone, no noise, no agenda, just you and Him. Tell Him honestly where you are running on empty and let Him meet you there. Sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do is simply stop and receive.
"The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul." Psalm 23:1–3
