A Devotional on God as Father

Scripture: "See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!" — 1 John 3:1

Father and child

There is a word that changes everything about how we relate to God, and it is one of the simplest words in any language. Father.

When Jesus taught His disciples to pray, He did not begin with "Almighty Creator" or "Sovereign Lord of the Universe." He began with two words: Our Father. That was not an accident. It was an invitation, a deliberate, tender pulling-back of the curtain to reveal the heart of who God is and how He sees you.

You are not merely a subject in His kingdom. You are not just a sinner saved by grace, standing at a respectful distance. You are a child. His child. And that changes absolutely everything.

The Father You Have Always Needed

Many of us come to God carrying complicated feelings about fatherhood. Some had wonderful fathers, and yet even the best earthly father is an imperfect reflection of the real thing. Others grew up with fathers who were absent, harsh, distracted, or difficult to please and without realising it, they have projected those experiences onto God.

But here is the good news: God is not like any father you have ever known. He is the Father that every father was always meant to point toward.

He is the Father who runs toward you when you return, not the one who makes you earn your way back (Luke 15:20). He is the Father who delights in you not because of what you produce or how well you perform, but simply because you are His (Zephaniah 3:17). He is the Father who disciplines with love and purpose, not in anger or frustration (Hebrews 12:6). And He is the Father who never leaves, never gives up, and never stops working things together for your good (Romans 8:28).

You do not have to strive for His approval. You already have it through Christ, fully and completely.

Lavished, Not Rationed

Go back to today's verse and sit with that word: lavished.

Not trickled. Not rationed out carefully in case it runs low. Lavished, poured out abundantly, generously, extravagantly. That is the language of a Father who holds nothing back when it comes to His love for you.

You are called a child of God, and John makes sure to add that this is what we are. This is not a title you grow into by becoming good enough. It is your present reality, right now, today, exactly as you are.

On the days when you feel unworthy of His attention, remember this: a good father does not love his children because they deserve it. He loves them because they are his. And you are His.

A Prayer for Today

Father, thank You that I do not have to earn Your love or prove my worth to receive Your attention. Thank You that You chose to call me Your child, not because I had it all together, but because of Your great grace. Help me to live today from that place of security, knowing I am fully known and fully loved by You. Where I have believed lies about who You are, replace them with truth. Teach me to come to You not as a distant God, but as my Father. Amen.

Reflect and Respond

Take a few minutes today to sit quietly with this question:

What does it mean to you, personally, that God calls Himself your Father?

Perhaps that word brings warmth and comfort. Perhaps it brings up complicated feelings. Wherever you are, bring it honestly to God. He is big enough to hold it and patient enough to meet you right there.
